Manga artist Torajiro Kishi (Maka-Maka) and blockbuster anime studio Madhouse (Trigun, Paprika, Ninja Scroll) love comics. So much so that they’ve decided to publish an original, Western-style comic with Dark Horse beginning this week. Devil #1 (of 4) begins a new, sci-fi take on the vampire genre.

Out of print since 2006, King has been one of Fantagraphics Books’ most-requested reprints. In recognition of the advances made in American social equality that has made it possible to elect America’s first black President, this week Fantagraphics is publishing it’s King: The Special Edition hardcover, a newly designed volume that includes the original 240-page graphic biography, as well as nearly a hundred additional pages of extra material.

Creator Ho Che Anderson spent over 10 years researching, writing, and drawing King, a graphic biography that separates Martin Luther King Jr. from the usual saintly, one-dimensional image.

This week artist Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night; Welcome to Hoxford) teams up with writer Ben McCool for Choker #1 (of 6) for this new hardboiled noir from Image Comics featuring Johnny “Choker” Jackson, once one of Shotgun City’s most promising police officers. Choker is a bitter private detective with a terrible case of Alien Hand Syndrome, an unusual neurological disorder in which one of the sufferer’s hands seem to take on a mind of its own. (Check it out folks, it’s real and that’s what it’s called!) Because of his disorder he found himself out of work, but now he’s unexpectedly been offered a job back on the force: provided he can nail a twisted drug dealer selling a very exclusive product.
